Tradition Meets Innovation
The University of Turin is one of Italy’s oldest and most respected universities. With nearly 80,000 students (academic year 2021–2022) and 120 facilities spread across Turin and key areas in Piedmont, it’s a true “city within a city”—driving culture, research, innovation, education, and employment.
Today, it stands as one of the largest universities in Italy, actively engaged in global research and education. While it covers almost every academic discipline—excluding Engineering and Architecture—it plays a vital civic role, helping to revitalize urban and rural areas, foster cultural exchange, promote social inclusion, and engage with real-world challenges.
Academic Programs
The University offers a broad range of programs across nearly every field of knowledge. Its research centers in Medical Diagnostics, Biosensor Technology, and Nanotechnology are among the most advanced in Italy.
Some programs are one-of-a-kind nationwide, including degrees in Military Strategy, Biotechnology, Sport Sciences, and Restoration and Conservation (in Venaria).
While the University has a strong legacy in traditional disciplines like History, Philosophy, Law, Economics, and Medicine, it’s also pushing into modern fields—Food Science, Social Policy, IT, Performing Arts, and Communication.
Libraries and Museums
UniTo operates 22 libraries across 32 locations, along with notable museums and collections. These include the Botanic Garden, the “Cesare Lombroso” Criminal Anthropology Museum, and the “Luigi Rolando” Human Anatomy Museum.
The University is also closely connected with local museums—ranging from ancient Egypt to contemporary art—and runs its own media hubs, including radio, TV, and film production units.
A University That Takes a Stand
The University of Turin is deeply committed to social responsibility. It leads initiatives on environmental sustainability, drug prevention, equal opportunity, and inclusion for students with special needs.
Internationally, the University maintains partnerships with institutions in India, China, Eastern Europe, Latin America, Asia, and across the Mediterranean, working alongside global organizations based in the region.
Students may also benefit from EDISU (Piedmont Regional Agency for the Right to University Education), which offers scholarships based on merit and financial need.
UniTo is a founding partner of UNITA – Universitas Montium, an alliance of six research universities across five countries:
- Universidade da Beira Interior (Portugal)
- Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour (France)
- Universidad de Zaragoza (Spain)
- Université Savoie Mont Blanc (France)
- Universitatea de Vest din Timișoara (Romania)
